It certainly has been a Chihuahua-filled few months at Animatch! September is here, and the little ones just keep coming. Meet Valentino, another Chi from a recent influx of dogs who found themselves without a home because there were simply too many to care for. While their basic needs may have been met—food, shelter and safety—dogs deserve more than simply getting by. They deserve a life filled with attention, companionship, enrichment and love.

At 8½ years old, Valentino is a handsome little fellow with plenty of personality packed into his 6½-pound frame. He can be a little shy and unsure when meeting new people, but he is gaining confidence every day as more people spend time with him and show him that the world can be a pretty good place. Once he gets to know you, you’ll discover there’s a sweet little guy underneath that initial reserve.

Valentino would be happiest in an adult home where life is calm and predictable. At his tiny size, he is best suited to people who understand that small dogs still need to be handled carefully—he doesn’t need to worry about being accidentally stepped on or tripped over. He gets along with other dogs and could enjoy having a respectful, well-balanced canine companion.

And then there is Valentino’s voice! This little guy apparently has opinions and is not shy about sharing them. For that reason, apartment or condo living probably isn’t his best match. A home where his occasional commentary won’t have the neighbours reaching for their earplugs would be much better.

Now, take a good look at those four little legs. They may be short, but they are strong and healthy—and Valentino needs to use them! Chihuahuas may be small enough to tuck under your arm, but they are still dogs who need regular exercise to stay fit, maintain muscle and enjoy life. So, put away the carrying bag and let this little dude walk! Several enjoyable walks each day will do far more for him than being chauffeured around.

Valentino may be a senior, but he still has plenty of life, personality and love to give. What he needs now is someone who will appreciate the charm of an older Chihuahua, give him time to build confidence, keep him active and, most importantly, make a lifetime commitment to him.
