About Clara

Clara is looking for a dedicated family who understands that a Saint Bernard is not a dog for everyone—and that raising one is a little different from raising a 20-pound pup! She needs training, exercise, patience and plenty of love to help her grow into the wonderful giant she is destined to become.

Clara came to Animatch because she was the last puppy in her litter who hadn’t found a buyer. Thankfully, she was kept safe, and now Animatch is determined that her next home will be her forever home, with a family committed to loving and caring for her for life.

At just four months old, Clara already weighs about 45 pounds, so you can do the math… this girl is going to be big. Her adult weight will likely be well over 100 pounds. Clara, however, has not yet consulted the growth chart and certainly doesn’t consider herself oversized. Her greetings can be enthusiastic, and she is still learning that not everyone wants to be greeted by a 45-pound puppy at full speed!

Training needs to start now—not when she is full grown and can pull you down the street. She is already discovering that walks are wonderful, especially when there are approximately 4,739 interesting smells to investigate. With consistent training, patience and a good sense of humour, Clara can learn to make those walks enjoyable for everyone.

Her ideal home will be Saint-savvy, with people who understand the breed and can provide daily exercise along with regular opportunities to stretch those long legs and have a good romp. Saint Bernards enjoy being outdoors in all kinds of weather, so snow zoomies will likely be part of the package. A fenced yard would certainly be appreciated!

And then there are the realities of living with a Saint Bernard: drool, slobber, shedding—and lots of all three! They are not a low-maintenance breed, and they should never be shaved. If you are looking for a petite, tidy little dog who fits neatly under your arm, Clara is probably not your girl!

Clara is still a puppy and has yet to appreciate just how much strength she has. For that reason, we are looking for a home with children 12+ who understand dogs and can respect her size and puppy exuberance.

Saint Bernard experience is a big plus. If you know and love the breed—and have room in your home, your car, your heart and possibly your vacuum cleaner for a very large girl—Clara would love to hear from you.
