About Avon

Avon is one of the lucky ones – if you can call it luck. Another dog from a Northern Community (Kuujjuarapik) who just gave birth to 8 puppies. Bringing Northern dogs south is not a long-term strategy by any stretch of the imagination. In a period where more and more surrenders are flooding in to rescues and shelters across the country and less people adopting, the last thing that brings us joy is another litter of puppies! There is a mass overpopulation crisis!

Dogs are staying in rescues for extended periods of time. Puppies that used to get 10-20 applications per pup now attract much less interest. With the overpopulation of dogs in these communities we are seeing more and more injured dogs. As cold weather approaches, there will be dogs that freeze. The population explosion is out of control. Most of the Northern dogs are mixes of Husky, German Shepherd, and Lab – not breeds that everyone is out looking for (too big, too energetic, etc.) and rescues are not here to convince you to adopt one.

The situation is deeply tragic. Rescues and shelters need the public to make themselves aware. Animatch, like other rescues, can’t solve the problem alone – we need the general public to reach out to organizations (and the government!) to help. There are groups across Canada that are trying to help address the overpopulation – sterilization is the only way. Animatch urges you to do your part. Nothing is going to change unless people speak up. In the meantime, the senseless deaths continue.

Avon gave birth to 8 puppies today (September 8th). She is safe, warm, and her puppies will be cared for Animatch won’t let them down; we will find homes for them. The birth of puppies is not a joyful event for rescues; there are far too many homeless dogs for us to celebrate.

Avon and her puppies will be ready to go to their new homes in about 8-9 weeks.
