Take Bouboule, for example. This sweet 9-year-old Shih Tzu was surrendered with his best friend, Jilly, because their family is moving. Sadly, both had endured years of severe dental disease. When teeth are left untreated, the bacteria don't just destroy the teeth—they can eat away at the jawbone itself. In both Bouboule and Jilly's case, much of their lower jaw had already been damaged. Bouboule recently had his remaining teeth removed and, judging by his newfound enthusiasm for life, he is feeling so much better.

Brushing your dog's teeth is the gold standard. We know that doesn't always happen, but regular dental checkups—especially for small breeds—can prevent painful gum disease, tooth loss, and infections that may spread to vital organs. Bouboule's story is a reminder that dental care isn't cosmetic—it's essential.

Bouboule is a cheerful little Shih Tzu who doesn't let being toothless slow him down one bit. While he adores his companion Jilly, he is quite capable of thriving in a home of his own. He has recently discovered that walks are one of life's greatest pleasures and insists on stopping to sniff absolutely everything along the way. (He's convinced every bush has an interesting story to tell.)

As a senior, Bouboule may not have as many years ahead of him as a younger dog, but what he does have is an endless supply of love to give.
