My name is Fable

My name is Fable

Well... that's the name the nice people at Animatch gave me. I don't answer to it—not yet. It's simply a way to identify me.  Maybe it's the perfect name because a fable is a story with a lesson. I just wish mine didn't have to be told.

I wish I could tell you what happened to me.

Did I get lost? Was I abandoned? Did someone hope that a passing stranger or a farmer would take me in? I don't know. If only I could speak.

What I do know is that I'm scared.

If I had a family who loved me but could no longer keep me, I wish they had made sure I was safe. They could have found me a loving home or asked a reputable rescue for help. No dog should ever be left to wonder while the people they trusted disappeared.

And if I am simply lost... are they looking for me?

Did they call Animal Control? Did they check with local rescues? Was I wearing an ID tag? Am I microchipped? Those are the things that bring lost dogs home.

Every day I wait and hope.

Helen says she has rarely seen a dog grieve for this long. It's been days, but I still howl, hoping my family will hear me. I look toward every car that comes down the driveway. I try to get back to wherever I think home is. I go for walks, but my heart isn't in them because I keep thinking, "Maybe today they'll come."

The people at Animatch keep telling me I'm safe now. They are patient with me. They comfort me when I cry. They promise that no matter what happened before, I will never be abandoned again.

So today, I'm asking for your help.  Please look closely at my face. Do you know me? Have you seen me before? Is there someone out there wondering where I am?  If you recognize me, please contact Animatch right away.

If no one comes for me, then in about 10 days I'll be ready to start a new chapter. I'll be looking for a family who will love me for the rest of my life—a family who understands that bringing a dog into their home is a promise, not until it's inconvenient, but forever.

Maybe that's the lesson my story was always meant to teach.
