Bye-bye 2025

Bye-bye 2025

For those who are interested, here is a brief recap of Animatch’s past year, along with some statistics and comparisons that help put 2025 into perspective.

In 2025, Animatch received approximately 1,600 adoption applications and welcomed around 270 dogs into our care. As those numbers show, many hopeful adopters were not matched with a dog this year. A number of applicants remain on our waitlist and may eventually adopt through Animatch, but we also strongly encourage people to consider other rescues. What matters most is not where you adopt from, but that you choose adoption.

Application numbers have declined significantly over the years. In the early 2000s, receiving 3,000 to 3,500 applications annually was the norm. In 2020—the height of the pandemic—we shattered all records with 7,000 applications, an experience we do not wish to repeat. Numbers dropped to 4,000 in 2021, followed by a steady decline each year thereafter: 1,970 in 2022, 2,031 in 2023, and a record low of 1,641 in 2024. In 2025, applications remained largely unchanged at 1,600.

At this point, it is difficult to foresee a significant shift in the near future. People are thinking more carefully before adopting a dog—and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Animatch, like many rescues, has always encouraged thoughtful, informed adoption, and it appears people are taking that message to heart.

The most common concern we hear, without question, is the cost of veterinary care. It is often the very first issue raised in conversations with potential adopters. Families, seniors, and individuals with average incomes frequently feel that dog ownership is financially out of reach, particularly when unexpected medical expenses can run into the thousands of dollars. Another growing concern is behavior. Many people are no longer willing—or able—to manage challenges such as leash reactivity, resource guarding, or dog-to-dog issues. Having dealt with these difficulties in the past, they are understandably hesitant to take them on again.

One bright and deeply appreciated constant is the loyalty of our previous adopters. They return to Animatch time and time again, and without their continued support, the situation could be far more challenging. These adopters trust Animatch—not because we are perfect, but because we are honest and transparent about our dogs. They often speak highly of our follow-ups, noting how necessary and reassuring they are, and how much they value the ongoing support.
