Smokey

A Male Shepherd x Lab presently Available For Adoption

Update - August:   Smokey here …. again, and I can’t wait to get back to this thing they call “family living”.  Gosh, it was so much fun.  Unfortunately, my adoptive family made the sad decision to return me to Animatch.  Understand, I have this trait called leash reactivity which means that I can get pretty defensive and excited if other dogs get too close when I am out on a walk (even though I don’t dislike other dogs).  This time I really need someone who is willing to work on leash manners!  One of the hardest things to remember with a dog like me is that a tight leash tells me you're stressed, making me even more defensive.  As a result, we need to work together to overcome this so that walks can be pleasant and an activity that we can both look forward to.  Always remember because I am reactive does not mean that I am an aggressive dog or that I don’t like other dogs.   I’m just letting you know that I’m gonna need some space.  I am such a smart, fun-loving, guy that I truly want to work hard at this; of course, a pocketful of treats is going to ensure my full attention.  You are going to need a lot of patience, time, consistency and understanding.  Then one day you can brag about me being the epitome of what you have always wanted in a dog.  Except until that day, we need to work together.  If you are a calm and experienced dog lover who never runs from a challenge, I’m ready to start whenever you are.  Please fill in the Adoption Form and let’s get started.

“We just don’t have time for him anymore.”  Animatch says this is one of the main reasons that dogs are given up.    Of course, humans are always inclined to add, “Giving him up is in the dog’s best interests, right?”   Anyhow, here is what Animatch would like to see.  When a person adopts a puppy or dog, they should expect that there will be changes in their own life during the dog’s life span.  With the exception of death or illness, your commitment to providing your dog with a home for his entire life is a given – after all, a family member should not lose his place in the family because you’ve hit a bump in the road (a new job, a new boyfriend, etc.)”

Now let me tell you a little about myself.  My name is Smokey and I can’t wait to be get back to family living.  I am ready to learn all the cool stuff that you will teach me.  Fun things like crate training, walking on leash, basic commands (I hear that they are essential).  You know all the important matters that good doggies need to know.  If you can guide me, I can do anything.  You are going to need a lot of patience, time, consistency and understanding.  Then one day you can brag about me being the epitome of what you have always wanted in a dog.  But until that day, we need to work together.  Being an adolescent dog means that I will keep you busy – lots of walking, hiking, running.  I need to live with a family who is home a good part of the day; exercise and socialization are so important for young dogs like me.   I am pretty awesome, but you will never know unless you find out for yourself!   So, fill in the Adoption Form and you might just be the lucky one who is chosen to come and meet me.
