How clever is this pooch?
Animatch in conjunction with Josh Taylor of Canine Education (http://www.canineeducation.ca/) has begun testing some of our adoptees using Dognition Assessment (https://www.dognition.com/). We feel that anything that helps potential adopters understand their dog just a little better is a bonus. Over the summer, Josh has tested a few of our adoptees; the testing is fun for the dogs as it is done with games. Knowing your dog’s cognitive skills will help you understand your dog’s unique personality. As an added bonus, it is a way to spend quality time with the dogs.
There are five categories of games, labeled Empathy (individual or bonded), Communication (self reliant or collaborative), Memory (retrospective or present minded), Cunning (trust worthy or wily) and Reasoning (impulsive or logical). After all games are completed and results are recorded, then each dog fits into 9 profiles. They are: Ace, Expert, Einstein, Charmer, Renaissance dog, Maverick, Socialite, Protodog, and Stargazer.
For example, Tuckster has been classified in the “expert” category. According to Dognition experts, “Dogs with the Expert profile have all of the cognitive tools they need to solve most of their daily problems on their own.” In fact, Helen and Josh have noticed that Tuckster is not excessively dependant on humans, he will and can figure things out for himself. Only 7% of canines fall into this category.
Animatch will share results on some of our adoptees that have the chance to have some fun with Josh. A very cool distraction for our canines while they wait for their furever home.
