Animatch gets applications .... lots of applications

In 2017, Animatch received over 4,000 applications.  It was busy year with more than 400 dogs adopted.  If you do the math, that leaves more than 3,600 disappointed potential adopters who were unable to adopt from Animatch.  We totally understand that people become frustrated and for that reason we encourage potential adopters to broaden their horizons and perhaps even modify their expectations (i.e. there aren’t too many female Havanese pups kicking around looking for a home).  Also understand that it is not humanly possible to have a conversation with every applicant, that is why we attempt to explain our procedures and what we are facing in this format.

It is natural to become defensive when you don’t get your “chosen” dog – your feelings of rejection are frustrating.    But, please understand all decisions are made for the benefit of the adoptee.  First and foremost, before applying anywhere ask yourself if this is the right time for a dog.   We may overuse the word commitment but that is exactly what it is – a promise to meet all your pet’s needs for his lifetime.  The main reasons dogs are given up are:  no time, new baby, moving, can’t afford.  Many of the dogs that people surrender were either a “free to good home” or a dog bought from Kijiji – they weren’t fussy and they didn’t have to answer any questions.   Much of Animatch’s criteria for adopting is based on the reasons for which families have surrendered their pets to us.   We are determined to not place them in a similar situation.

Dogs (and cats) are entering rescues and shelters each year at an alarming rate …. and not all are going out alive.  So, if you are 100% certain that you want to adopt and know that you have the time, the money, the desire to exercise and train, then apply at all reputable rescues.  Visit

To all our supporters and families who have given our dogs homes, Animatch thanks you.
